Memorial Park is CLOSED!

    By Judi Mosley, 03/16/2020

Notice from the City of Grass Valley:

EFFECTIVE DATE(S): March 16th until further notice

The City of Grass Valley is closing all parks to help mitigate and slow the spread of COVID-19. Parks will be closed as of the morning of March 16th. City officials plan to reevaluate the situation on April 1st, 2020 and will provide an update at that time. List of parks affected: Memorial Park, Memorial Pool, Condon Park, Minnie Park, DeVere Mautino Park, Dow Alexander Park, Elisabeth Daniels Park, Glenn Jones Park, and Lyman Gilmore Turf Field.

The City of Grass Valley’s top priority is the health and safety of this community and its citizens. This is a fluid situation, and we will continue to monitor it closely, including guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), along with state and county health departments. We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause, but we believe the potential risks of inaction are too great to ignore.

    Member Clinics

    By Pavana Bohegian, 03/11/2020

Grass Valley Pickleball Club is committed to providing opportunities to improve skills of our members.  We have held several successful clinics in 2019 and will continue as long as there is interest.  We hope to plan at least one clinic per month for the Spring through Fall season and possibly some indoor clinics next winter.

These clinics will be held during club reserved times at Memorial Park (either Sundays 12 noon to 2 pm or Wednesdays 4 to 6 pm).  They are limited to 16 GVPC Club Member participants only and often sell out within 24 hours of email notice. Some clinics will be for specific levels of play.  We have programs for beginners and recreational players.  These clinics are focused on the 3.0+ player.

Please see the Members Area for more information on future clinics/instructors and be sure to check your email regularly for the sign-up notification. You can now pay instantly for these clinics via PayPal when you sign up.

Mark your calendars!  Dink 'N' Donuts March 21. Members only.

    By Judi Mosley, 03/04/2020

Our first dinking competition of the year will take place on Saturday, March 21, during the morning club hours.  Email has already gone out.  Sign up using the green RSVP button in the email. The Rules of Play are also included in the email.

Check-in and warm-ups will start at 8:30 am.  The competition begins at 9:00.

We will provide bagels and - at Jorgen's request - donuts.  (You thought I was going to say cheese Danish, didn't you?)  Bring your own beverage.

    Rules of Play

    • Everyone starts at the kitchen line, and the server serves diagonally.
    • If the serve hits the net (but stays in the kitchen), it’s a let and is done over.
    • If the ball lands outside the kitchen in the first five hits, it’s out.
    • You can hit the ball before it bounces as long as you’re not in the kitchen.
    • After the 5th dink, you can hit it anywhere in the court.
    • Hint: It helps to count each hit out loud to keep track.  (Since the serving side will be the first, third, and fifth hits, the non-serving side will have the first opportunity to hit outside the kitchen.)
    • All lines (including the kitchen line) are considered IN. Each side is responsible for calling in/out shots. The court captain can be consulted if she/he saw the shot, but is not always in the best position to see every shot.
    • Points are scored, and serves rotate just like regular pickleball.
    • Game is played to 7, win by 1.
    • The court captain is there to monitor play, count the number of dink shots and keep score.  The court captain has the final say.  No appeals.  No whining.
    • Each player will get the number of points scored by his/her team.  For example, if the final score is 7-6, each of the winners will get 7 points, and each member of the losing team will get 6 points.
    • If time allows, we will play three rounds, with different partners for each round.  We may have a playoff competition in the event of a tie.

Latest discussions with City of GV

    By Judi Mosley, 02/07/2020

On Wednesday, Connie Leonard, Judi Mosley, and Mike Mann met with the City of Grass Valley to discuss pickleball.  The City kicked off the meeting by explaining that they are pursuing grants to build new courts in Grass Valley, preferably at Memorial Park.  While these things take time, it's exciting to see that the City is moving in the right direction.  We also discussed GVPC's court times, improvements at the Park, and the possibility of changing the City's rules for court usage during non-Club times.  Stay tuned for more on those issues.
