Open Play

An Open Play session is one where members drop in, without advance reservations, to play other drop-in members on courts reserved by the Club. Open Play sessions are for players of all levels on all courts. A sign up board is used to rotate play.

Check the Calendar for times. Regular Open Play times are sometimes reserved for other club activities such as coaching clinics.

New to Pickleball?

We highly recommend you take advantage of a complimentary introductory clinic before joining us at Open Play. Please call our friendly USAPA Ambassador Victor Simon at 530-205-9752 to schedule a clinic or send us a message on our contact form and we will get in touch with you. Membership is not required!

Outdoor Open Play

GVPC holds club member Open Play sessions at Memorial Park’s four courts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 to 11 AM, Wednesdays from 4 to 6 PM and Sundays from 12 to 2 PM.

Visitors to our area, members' guests and non-members are welcome to drop in for a $5 fee – play up to 3 times as a non-member. We hope you will choose to join after that!

Indoor Open Play

Our indoor play location is three courts in the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building Auditorium. Current GVPC Indoor Open Play times are Mondays and Wednesdays from noon until 3 PM. There is no public play option at this venue. Please see our Calendar for changes and additions to this schedule.

Indoor sessions are pay-to-play for all players. Wristbands must be purchased and attached prior to play. Members may purchase 6 wristbands for $20 or pay a drop-in fee of $4; non-members pay $5 to participate.

Open Play Procedures

Balls are provided for all GVPC Open Play sessions; at Memorial Park loaner paddles are also available if needed. Please read our Play & Safety Procedures before joining us for Open Play.

Public Court Play

Outside of GVPC reserved times, the pickleball courts at Memorial Park are open daily from dawn until 10 PM for public play. The lights for night-time play are free. A water fountain is provided from April to November, but please bring a chair as seating is limited. During times not reserved for GVPC member play, all pickleball players are required to comply with City of Grass Valley policies regarding use of the Memorial Park courts.  These rules are posted at the courts. We hope the following guidance will be helpful for our members:

If courts are full and players are waiting, the City of Grass Valley allows players or group of players to hold a court for a maximum of one (1) hour - first come, first served. Please note your start time, and check to see if anyone is waiting at the end of your time. The spirit here is courtesy and sportsmanship, so if all courts are occupied and your group has been playing for an hour or more you should release the court at the end of the current game. If you wish to play more please get in line for the next available court.

While we encourage the use of PlayTimeScheduler (PTS) to organize games outside of club reserved Open Play sessions, please be aware that PTS is not a court reservation system. Established players or a group of players on a court has discretion as to whether anyone, club member or not, may join that group's session. Please also note that PTS has a “private invitation” option.

To prevent misunderstandings,  the GVPC "lock-box" should only be used during the reserved club times (see above).
